I can believe both.
Just figured you would have some detail information verifying this incident.
In case you dig something else up at least this tid bit of info came up to cross reference.

There is no doubt there were several friendly fire incidents.
I wonder if the techniques improved over WW2?

Somehow I doubt that one. The two recovered F-86s (one A and one E) were sent back to the Zhukovskiy Institute in Moscow for detailed examination.

More likely than not the rumor got started by a pilot who mistook friendlies for enemies and the grunts decided it had to be a bad guy.
