One other problem endemic to F-84s in particular was the use of repetitive "buzz" numbers and as a result they had to add suffices like A, B, and C. The full serials were on the tails, but for shorthand the last three and a letter code were it (e.g. FS-584-A)
 
That could be one of the problems with F-84s, but doesn't seem to have been used with F-51Ds or F-86s.

PS Joe -- the oficial Sabre loss totals were (when broken down) 7 x F-86A, 58 x F-86E, 13 x F-86F. Some of the early "experts" made the mistake of using total MiG claims and dividing by 58, getting the now legendary 14:1 kill ratio.
