Off topic -- W.E.B. Griffin's new KW novel
I have had the pleasant surprise of receiving an advance copy of Griffin's
latest "Corps" novel, RETREAT, HELL!, from Putman. After the bad editing
which detracted from the story, also set in the Korean War, in his previous
novel I wasn't too sure this would be any better. I was wrong. This novel
is written and edited with care and the storyline writing is pure vintage
Griffin.
This takes place just after the Inch'on Landing and continues up to Chinese
Intervention in December. Griffin has woven a storyline that includes what
happened to Pick Pickering (MIA in the last novel,) some of the political
intrigue and behind-the-scenes maneuvering, advance in to NK , MacAuthur's
disbelief the Chinese would enter the war based on reports from his G-2, MG
Willoughby and the fight by the CIA to get the real word to him. It is a
well-written blending of fact and fiction and worth reading. It is a real
page turner and well worth reading.
For those who don't know, W.E.B. Griffin's real name is William E.
Butterworth III. He was a CIC agent in Germany/Austria in the late 1940s,
recalled to active duty in 1950, served as a combat infantryman and became
Gen. I.D. White's PIO in Korea (for who he had worked as security in Europe
in the late 1940s.) After Korea, Bill went to helicopter school at Fort
Riley and later learned to fly fixed wing. He was on the ground floor at
Fort Rucker when the aviation school was started there and was with Test &
Development.. After being RIF'd he stayed on with T&D as a civilian but
began writing war novels and teenage action books on the side. This led to
his being given the job of writing the "MASH goes to...." series after MASH
became a hit TV series. At the same time his, "Brotherhood of War" series
took off in paperback. From that point he has become one America's premier
war fiction novel writers with millions of paperback and hardcover novels sold.
He is also an old and dear friend.
