I'm not sure that I agree with your first statement? General Macarthur made a great deal of promises. In fact, he wrote allot checks that he couldn't cash. Rather, he required that the men he lead to do that for him.
Christmas is a special time in my house too. According to my father, his brother thought that the war would be over by Christmas of 49' (remember, Macarthur thought that the Chinese would never enter the War). While my father was aboard a Naval ship in the Mediterranean that Christmas, my uncle spent Christmas of 49' as a wounded POW in Camp 5 and would later die come May. You see, there isn't a Christmas that has since come and gone that my father hasn't wished he could celebrate it with his brother.
I do however agree with your last statement that Christmas is a special day to remember those who didn't make it back!
