Re: Email about Turkish Brigade

One of the guys in my Vietnamese class in 1969 was married to the daughter of one of the veterans of that brigade. He said they were absolutely hardnosed about any sort of malefeasance, especially when done to them.

At one point they found a local thief -- the kind known as "slickee boys" long afterwards -- ripping off some of their kit. The solution: impail him on a hill near their site. The local mayor came up to complain about it and instead of the thief, they impailed the mayor.

One rumor that was never sorted out was that two GIs snuck into their headquarters one night, lowered the Turkish flag, and cut out the star and moon as a prank. The Turks found out (natch) and demanded the US turn the two over to them. The US command did as it needed and respected the Turks and the two are still listed as MIA. (The last one sounds a bit less than anecdotal and more mythological, but the Turks were given the reputation of being tough.)
