The Soviets claim that their gun cameras were really awful. There was a
lag in the camera snapping stills when the trigger was depressed, and it also
cut off very quickly so that it rarely confirmed a kill when they did hit
something.
The method of "two other pilots verified the shootdown" which was number
1 on the Soviet verification means seems to have been the most accepted,
followed by recovery of wreckage. Both of them are subject to falibility and
are far from conclusive, ergo many AA losses got claimed as air-to-air kills
from wreckage.
