The MASH on TV was fictional but there were a number of MASH units throughout Korea during the war.


As for the ethics of taking off a limb to save a life, that decision was strictly up to the Doctor since (during the Korean War and in previous wars) a soldier had no say in his/her treatment.

You could (in theory) always challenge a plan or tactic until the order to execute was given. At that point you were bound to follow orders.
