[KOREAN-WAR-L:11392] Re: Partisan Operations and Tan-Do/T'an-Do

Jack,

The only AAA guns in the islands were on Ch'o-do and Paengnyong-do (38th parallel and 12 miles out in the Yellow Sea.) But these guns (quad-50s on half-tracks & twin 40mm on a M-26 tank chassis belonging to a U.S. AAA Bn) did not arrive in the Islands until spring of 1952.

As for AA fire during the attack on Taehwa-do, think the pilots were a little nervous and seeing phantoms. It could be one of the Brit/Australian ships was in that area but I don't think so since it was SOP for those ships to haul ass south long before dawn. One other possibility is the Agency had two WWII subchasers and one might have been in that area returning from landing or picking up agents. These vessels did have 20mm & 40mm AA. However, these subchasers normally operated in the Sea of Japan off NK's coast from Hungnam to the Siberian border. Anyway, can't see ships firing at aircraft until actually being attacked, especially that far away.
